Balenciaga

Spanish fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga Eizaguire was the founder of the Balenciaga house.  Born in 1895, he was most famously known for his talents as a couturier, with both Coco Chanel and Christian Dior sighting him as the best in the business.  In the 50s, Balenciaga was known for his inventiveness, releasing collections that were in stark contrast to Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’.  Styles that he is most closely associated with are the tunic dress, the chemise dress and the Empire line.  Since Balenciaga’s passing in 1972, the house has been completely transformed.  Under the guidance of current creative director Demna Gvasalia Balenciaga, a brand once closely associated with couture, has been heavily transformed into a champion of streetwear and a major rival to similar labels Off-White and Vetements.
